Comparison of several forms of disk storage showing tracks not-to-scale ; green denotes start and red denotes end. A CD-ROM drive without case The rotational mechanism in an optical drive differs considerably from that of a hard disk drive's, in that the latter keeps a constant angular velocity CAV , in other words a constant number of revolutions per minute RPM.
With CAV, a higher throughput is generally achievable at the outer disc compared to the inner. It was a feature important for streaming audio data that always tend to require a constant bit rate.
But to ensure no disc capacity was wasted, a head had to transfer data at a maximum linear rate at all times too, without slowing on the outer rim of disc. This led to optical drives—until recently—operating with a constant linear velocity CLV. The spiral groove of the disc passed under its head at a constant speed. Later CD drives kept the CLV paradigm, but evolved to achieve higher rotational speeds, popularly described in multiples of a base speed. For Blu-ray drives, base speed is 6.
Because keeping a constant transfer rate for the whole disc is not so important in most contemporary CD uses, a pure CLV approach had to be abandoned to keep the rotational speed of the disc safely low while maximizing data rate. But switching to CAV requires considerable changes in hardware design, so instead most drives use the zoned constant linear velocity Z-CLV scheme. This divides the disc into several zones, each having its own constant linear velocity.
Without higher rotational speeds, increased read performance may be attainable by simultaneously reading more than one point of a data groove, but drives with such mechanisms are more expensive, less compatible, and very uncommon.
If you rewind one of those squirrel cage stators, especially one of those that has the coils that, looking through the center of the stator, resembles a rope circle, it is best to find a piece of wood as big as the inside of the original coils, or you can also use a Dremel to sand down a slightly oversized block or stick to the proper size, and wind the coils on that stick.
Then, once the coil is finished, slide it off the stick, wrap the long sides with the type of motor insulation that wraps like tape, that comes in a roll that resembles a roll of tape, insert one long side into the stator slot while leaving the other long side hanging out, repeat the process, being sure to note the direction of winding so you can insert the coils according to the required polarities, and once all coils are in, then you pivot them and insert the other long sides into the slots in the stator, wire the coils together end to end, and you're good to go.
To make it easier to insert, you should wind the coils in a way that the coil is almost flat through it's thickness. Practice on an old or inexpensive motor before you try working on an expensive one.
For instance, if you are winding one post in a clockwise direction and you move onto the next post, you would wind that post in a counterclockwise direction. And then the next post is wound clockwise, after that, counterclockwise, and so forth. The coils must be insulated from the steel laminates at all times. Most vendors sell motor insulation in the form of large sheets that can be cut and sized simply with a pair of scissors. Motor insulation can also be found in the form of a wrapping tape.
But be warned; it needs to be specifically designed for use in an electric motor. Regular electrical tape, duct tape, tarp tape, etc, will not work in an electric motor as it will wear out and eventually pose an electrocution hazard.
